ARTIST STATEMENT

 

I am inspired by nature in all forms and particularly animals or birds; my favorites are large cats, and birds of prey. Recently I have also been inspired to paint small garden birds such as chickadees and finches. Many people have said when they look at my animals that the eyes follow them and they feel they can reach into the art piece to touch them. This is an ultimate compliment to my artistic endeavors.

 

When I begin working on a new piece, I initially explore many photographs of the animal to get a sense of their environment, nature and range of expressions. Once I determine the emotion I wish to evoke in the painting or drawing I begin working on the layout of the drawing, roughly sketching in the animal and background and mentally planning my approach to the image. This is always an exciting stage and I'm always anxious to begin putting the details in and having the animal "come to life".
